Walk Through the Grades, 8:30 a.m.
Visit several grades during Main Lesson. Please register in advance by calling 916-427-5022. This group tour is intended for parents only. If you are not able to arrange childcare, contact our Director of Admissions to schedule a private appointment.
Main Lesson, the first two hours of each grade school day, is designed to immerse the child in a subject theme over a period of three to four weeks. A four-week block of, for example, history will become an artistic and imaginative learning process supported by activities such as the recitation of poetry, singing, drawing, and writing - all integrated with the theme - as well as the daily recalling and discussing of the content given by the teacher the day before. It is during Main Lesson that Reading and Writing, Science, Mathematics, History and Geography are taught by the Class Teacher. In the lower grades, the amount of time the children spend in writing at their desks is proportionately small as compared to artistic activity and physical movement. The reverse is true as the child matures into the upper grades.
Tuesday, May 13:

Waldorf education recognizes that the young child learns primarily through imitation and example. Great care is taken to provide an atmosphere that brings nurturing warmth, guidance and cooperation to a child's world of constructive fantasy and imagination. The child is taken into a nurturing environment surrounded by natural objects such as wood, shells, stones, cotton, wool and silk fabrics. Poems, songs, circle games, fairy tales and nature stories provide a foundation for reading. The week is rhythmically structured to include storytelling and puppetry, painting, creative play, singing, crafts, and movement.
Get answers to your questions about our kindergarten, our school, and Waldorf education in general. Kindergarten teacher Siobhan Hudson, Administrator Meredith Johanson, and Admissions Director and former class teacher Deirdre Johnson will be on hand to respond to your inquiries.
Reservations appreciated but not required. Call (916) 427-5022 ext. 13.
As parents and teachers it is clear that there are certain personality traits and tendencies already inherent in our children when they come to us. These qualities are part of what makes each one unique. What works with one child as a parent or a teacher may totally backfire with another child. Sometimes it is much easier for us to understand and relate to children who are most like ourselves, but of course it is important for us to learn to work with all of our children.
Rudolf Steiner discussed four "temperaments" that are found in human beings: choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic and melancholic. Penni Sparks will share her insights on these temperaments and how they can help us in our parenting and teaching.
Penni's workshops are filled with insight, humor and very practical tools you can use with the children in your life.

Grade School Concert - Twice a year Camellia holds a special kind of gathering: the grade school concerts. The children in grades Two through Eight will don their finest clothes and join parents, friends, and grandparents to celebrate the students' work. These offerings may include recitations, songs, eurythmy, and instrumental music.
The grade school concerts are an opportunity for members of the community to see the progression of work through the grades and to see the development of the children. Children in the lower grades look up to the "big kids" and what is coming in the years ahead, while children in upper grades enjoy remembering songs and poems from their early years.
Our Spring Concert is scheduled for Friday, June 2, at the 24th Street Theater located at 2791 24th St. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and should last about one and a half hours.
