Joshua Wilson

School Director

Joshua Wilson brings with him17 years of experience working in schools, including as a Waldorf school administrator, pedagogical director, development director, teacher, and administrator. In 2007, he co-founded Escuela Caracol, Guatemala’s first Waldorf school and the most established Waldorf school in Central America. Joshua carries a deep commitment to Waldorf education with experience as both a teacher and an administrator and he was particularly drawn to Camellia because of its emphasis on collaboration, relationships, and diversity. His experience, ideas, administrative skills, cross-cultural experiences, and commitment to faculty-led education have brought him to Camellia, and he is particularly moved by the deep love and commitment that the community has for the school. Joshua is excited to collaborate and be a part of shaping the future of Camellia Waldorf School.

Mr. Wilson joined Camellia in 2021 and is also a Camellia parent.

Laura Embrey

Pedagogical Chair

Laura Embrey has decades of experience in Waldorf classrooms – in independent Waldorf schools and public Waldorf-inspired schools. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in Education from the University of California Berkeley. She received her Waldorf teaching credential from Rudolf Steiner College. Ms. Embrey's abiding interest in human development has led her to become an expert teacher for children in preschool through high school. It has also sparked her deep interest in form drawing, a subject unique to Waldorf education, which she sees as one of the many amazing instruments given to Waldorf teachers and all human beings to help us manifest who we truly are.

 Ms. Embrey joined Camellia in 2017.

Sidonie Ospina

Office Manager and Registrar

Sidonie Ospina has held a number of administrative positions at Camellia, always learning new skills, keeping us organized and taking on new responsibilities, always ready and willing to do whatever is needed to make Camellia thrive.

A skilled artist, Ms. Ospina earned a certificate from the Art Students League of New York, where she studied painting, drawing, etching and ceramics. Before coming to Camellia, she worked as an in-house artist at the textile company, Fortuny, in New York and as a production manager for the same company in Venice, Italy.

 

Ms. Ospina has been a Camellia parent for more than 8 years. She joined the Camellia administration staff in 2014.

Janna Nygren

Operations Manager

Janna Nygren has a bachelor’s degree in American studies from the University of Hawaii Manoa and has formally studied early childhood education. She has more than 20 years’ experience working with children of all ages and has been a preschool teacher, special education classroom aide, and mentoring program coordinator. Ms. Nygren has also worked with non profit organizations as a program coordinator and grant writer. Her passion for working with children paired with her administrative skills have made her well suited to the many responsibilities of her position at Camellia.

 

Ms. Nygren has been a Camellia parent for more than 10 years and is delighted to be of service to the community. She joined the Camellia administration staff in 2016.

Jenny Woods

Enrollment and Outreach Coordinator

Jenny Woods considers Camellia her second home and brings a bright smile and “can-do” attitude to the school. She has a great deal of nonprofit experience that includes fundraising, grant writing and event planning. She’s also well versed in the ever-changing world of social media. A Sacramento native, Ms. Woods has an associates' degree in social science from Sacramento City College. She has also formally studied early childhood education and women’s studies at California State University Sacramento. Ms. Woods loves being a mom and when not at Camellia or with her family, she paints, sews and reads.

 

Ms. Woods has been a Camellia parent since 2010 and is an alumni parent as well. She joined the Camellia administration staff in 2019.

Meredith Johanson

Interim Bookkeeper

Hubert Bones

Grounds Keeper

Meredith Johanson received her B.S. in Mathematics from the University of California, Davis and a Master of Library Science from the University of California, Berkeley. After 18 years in various special and medical libraries in Sacramento, and several years as a parent and board member at Camellia Waldorf School, she became the school's first administrator and served in that role for 18 years. She has completed a course in Waldorf school administration from Sunbridge Institute in New York. She later served as the Director of Accreditation for the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, from 2014 to 2020. 

Ms. Johanson is an alumni parent of Camellia's first graduating 8th grade class and has served on the board of trustees since 1991. She joined the administrative team in 1993.

Hubert is a craftsman and woodworker. He has always enjoyed volunteering his time and making projects for the school and is excited to be a part of the Camellia staff. Hubert takes great pride in keeping the Camellia campus beautiful and healthy, making sure it is as beautiful as it can be for the children!

Mr. Bones is a Camellia parent. He joined the administrative team in 2020.
